A new coffee discovery! For years, the team at JNP noted that there was one coffee from Ngozi Province that consistently scored higher than all the others from this region. Given JNP founder’s kinship with the area – after all, her mother was born and raised there – they set out to track down that prized source. It took some work, but they finally found the hill where this special coffee grows. The differentiation that terroir can make in coffee is astounding! JNP Coffee now works with the farmers of Bahire Coffee. In Kirundi, Bahire means “be well.” The women of Bahire are producing exceptional coffee.
This small microlot is from the women producers who own and run the farms and the washing station. Torque started working with JNP last year by getting samples from well before the coffee was ready, we cupped through dozens and dozens of lots of coffee from super early parchment type samples through the long preparation stages. This microlot consistently stood out to our team with its clarity and sweetness. So we bought the entire microlot.
Burundi’s coffee is newly emerging on the specialty stage. Coffee grows across highland regions like Ngozi, Kayanza, and Muyinga at 1,600–2,000 meters. Progressive cooperatives and modern washing stations have transformed quality and transparency. Harvest runs March through July, producing vibrant, high-acidity coffees with layered sweetness and fresh, fruit-forward profiles gaining global attention.
